Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to feel ready to adventure with us! Here are the answers to our most common questions to help you be more confident in choosing Bridgeford. If you don’t see an answer to a question you have, contact us, and our team will help you out!

Application Process

How do I enroll in an adventure?

That’s easy. Apply for enrollment on our enrollment page or click the enroll button in the menu. A parent needs to complete the application form. The enrollment application form collects some basic details about the participant and parent(s)/guardian (s), some health information, and requires a small deposit.

Does applying for enrollment guarantee admission?

No, an application for enrollment does not guarantee acceptance into the program. We review all applications on a first-come, first-served basis.

Does Bridgeford charge an application fee?

Yes, we do – a small non-refundable $25.00 deposit. This is paid by credit or debit card at the end of the application. Applications are not reviewed until the deposit has been paid.

We charge this fee to help cover the time and costs of reviewing applications and to ensure a parent or guardian’s approval.

Those accepted for the adventure will have the $25 credited towards their program tuition.

Can I apply and attend with someone I know?

Creating a community among participants is one of the highlights of our adventures. We encourage you to meet new people and build lifelong relationships. To facilitate community building, we limit the number of participants from the same community.

We do, however, allow participants to apply with a friend. Our application includes a section for adding a friend. You need their full name and physical address so that we can match your applications. On that note, BOTH individuals still need to apply and should list each other as the friend they wish to attend with.

When will I hear back from Bridgeford Adventures regarding our application?

We make every effort to contact applicants within two weeks of their application. Sometimes this timeline may be delayed due to holidays or other factors. If you feel our team has not contacted you within a reasonable time, please contact us to request a status update.

I’m not a resident of the US, can I still apply?

Absolutely, international participants are welcome on all of our programs. A couple of considerations.

One, all instruction is provided in English. While perfect fluency is not required, it is essential to have a conversational understanding of English and the ability to speak it.

Two, every country can have different visa requirements. It is the participant’s responsibility to obtain all required visas, passports, and any other necessary travel documents.

What is Bridgeford Adventures refund policy?

Please see our Terms and Conditions page for more information.

What is included in program tution and what additional expenses should we anticipate?

Program tuition for one of our adventures covers all meals, professional and local guides during excursions, accommodations for each overnight, transportation during the adventure, educational supervision by professionals, and all other planned activity costs while on the adventure.

Additional expenses include the following:

  • Transportation to and from the adventure starting point. Participants may be dropped off or fly into the destination city. For youth flying, we, or a partner, provide transportation from the airport to our meeting location.
  • For those flying, any baggage fees and unaccompanied minor fees as applicable.
  • Laundry services (if available – see trip packing list for more information)
  • Souvenirs and snacks at gift shops, outposts, or stores.
Can homeschoolers apply?

Of course!! Our first adventure is geared specifically for homeschoolers. We’d love to have you join our adventure.

Safety and Risk Management

How safe are your programs?

Safety for participants is our number one concern. Every adventure has an internal risk management plan.
Bridgeford Adventures cannot guarantee absolute safety. No program can ensure complete safety. We mitigate all risk through training, hiring only the best leaders, having evacuation plans, and working with other partners to vet all vendors.

Do I need previous experience before joining an adventure?

No previous experience is needed to join our adventures, but some adventures may be easier with prior experience. Our team and local guides will provide the support, guidance, training, and encouragement you need to be successful.

If you have questions about a specific program, contact our office, and we can help determine whether the experience is right for you.

Can you accommodate food allergies and dietary restrictions?

We will try our best to accommodate all allergies and dietary restrictions, but we may not always be able to do so. Please contact us if you have any questions about an upcoming adventure.

Do I need any immunizations for my adventure?

We require all participants to have had a tetanus shot within the past 10 years. If an adventure requires any specific immunizations, it will be shared on the trip page.

How can I contact my child?

Your child can bring their phone (see the phone question below). Please remember that some locations are remote with very poor cell service. When we are in areas of good cell service, we will provide time each day for participants to call home if they wish. Additionally, our group leaders will check in with our office team each day during the adventure to provide an update on participant status.

The phrase we tell parents is, “No news is good news.” If anything were to go wrong, our team will contact you as soon as possible.

What happens if my child gets sick or injured during the adventure?

Our number one priority is the health, safety, and well-being of our participants. Our team members follow strict treatment protocols specific to the injury or illness. For minor injuries or illnesses, our field team will treat on-site and notify our office team. For more serious injuries or illnesses, our field team will work with local emergency services personnel to provide treatment and transportation (if needed) to a healthcare facility. Whenever our staff provides more than basic first aid, our team will contact parents as soon as possible to notify them of the situation.  In general, we will contact parents any time non-routine medical treatment is needed.

After treatment, if possible, the participant will continue in the group and be closely monitored over the next few days or until symptoms have subsided.

How does Bridgeford handle daily or weekly medications?

We do not allow participants to hold onto their own medications for safety reasons. This includes over-the-counter and prescription medications. Prior to departure, we will work with participants and parents to list all necessary medications, dosages, frequencies, and times of administration. Our field staff will administer medications and keep a log of each medication administered and the date it was administered. The individual’s log is available to parents upon request at the conclusion of the adventure.

Participants are able to carry prescribed inhalers and EpiPens.

Participants who take refrigerated medications should contact our office before applying for enrollment to ensure the selected adventure can accommodate their needs.

Life on Your Adventure

Who are the group leaders?

This changes for each adventure depending on our leaders’ availability. A youth development professional leads all trips. Additionally, youth development professionals planned the whole experience before we even market a trip. That’s our guarantee to you: people who know youth, the science of youth development, and the experiences teens need to be successful planned and led the entire experience.

Each trip will also have at least one other adult (or more, depending on group size) as our secondary trip leader. These individuals may also be youth development professionals, college students pursuing a degree in a relevant field, or other professionals with experience in youth programming. All team members have passed a federal background check, received training, and are Red Cross-certified in First Aid and CPR/AED.

Can I mail a letter or a package to my child while on their adventure?

Kind of. Because some adventures take place in remote locations, and all trips involve moving from location to location, it isn’t easy to mail letters or packages to your child during the program.

Parents, friends, and family can mail letters/postcards (not packages) to our address at P.O. Box 51, Hazlehurst, GA 31539. These letters must be mailed at least two weeks before the departure date. We will distribute these to your child on the first night of our trip. Letters that arrive late will not be mailed back.

Are phones and other electronics allowed?

We know this is a big one. The answer is yes; they are. Now, before you run away, phones and tech are so integrated into all of our lives, even the lives of adults. We take pictures with them, film videos of incredible moments, jot down our thoughts, record sounds so we can hear them later, and more. Technology is a tool, and it’s one that we use every single day.

The problem is not the tool, but rather the overdependence on it or screen addiction. We believe that allowing teens to bring their phones and other technology does not limit the experience but helps them capture it in a more meaningful way. That being said, we do watch for overuse and dependence. We ask that phones only be used to capture moments during the day. If we notice overuse, we may collect them for the rest of the day or the rest of the adventure.

It is important to remember that we do not guarantee the safety of any technology, including phones, tablets, e-readers, cameras, laptops, etc., even if we have to collect them due to overuse. Many of our trips involve water, hiking in rugged places, or in urban locations. Lastly, regarding larger and heavier technology like laptops, ask yourself, “Do I really want to carry this on my back all day for the entire adventure?”

Who even goes on these adventures?

Awesome question! Our groups are organized by age using the Ages and Stages of Youth Development framework and not by grade level. This ensures that you are with other kids like you. Our groups are smaller; the smallest is 8, and the largest is 20 participants. Groups are also co-ed. We do exercise a minimum of 2/3 to 1/3 rule for gender. This means we will never have a single male participant in a group of 14 female participants, and vice versa.

What do we do if it rains?

We cue, Singing in the Rain music, and prepare to perform our own rendition!

Okay, so maybe we are not that theatrical. In all seriousness, light rain is no problem. Our staff plans activities with flexibility in mind, and rain rarely prevents meaningful exploration. Be sure to pack a rain jacket for this exact reason. Rain may force our field team to adjust the itinerary of a trip include activities that are more appropriate for rainy weather.

In situations of heavy rain, lightning storms, or other inclement weather, our field team will work to find shelter or move activities inside. If severe weather occurs in our area, our field team will communicate with our office team.

You share a lot about learning and development – is this going to be like a school field trip?

Absolutely not!

Are we going to hold your hand the entire way? No – that’s creepy.

Are we going to keep you to a strict timeline and keep you from exploring or trying something new? No – that defeats our whole goal.

Yes, we are going to learn some cool things from awesome people, but this won’t feel like a school or co-op field trip. This is an adventure. It will push you out of your comfort zone and give you lifelong memories.

What type of rules are there with Bridgeford?

Bridgeford Adventures expects the best of our participants. Our rules are crafted to help create a positive and safe environment for everyone. All participants and a parent must sign a code of conduct, which will be sent to you once your enrollment application has been approved.

We do have a few zero-tolerance rules that, if broken, will result in automatic and immediate dismissal. In the event of a dismissal, families are responsible for the costs of alternative lodging and transportation. Some of these rules, if broken, also involve local law enforcement. Our zero-tolerance rules include the following:

  • Possession or use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or tobacco products (including vapes and e-cigarettes)
  • Possession or use of a weapon
  • Assault, harassment, threats
  • Inappropriate sexual behavior
  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Possession of fireworks
  • Distribution of medications
